Hopkins opened up semi final play in the 6AAAA playoffs against Edina on Tuesday night. Combining strong defensive play and consistent offensive pressure, the Royals beat the Hornets 6-1, avenging an earlier loss. Mak Merritt controlled the Hornet’ s bats throwing a 2 hitter while striking out 6. Merritt was backed by strong outfield play from Morgan Hawley, Evelyn Barczak and Adisa Preston. The Royals offense was led by Natalie DenHartog and Cassy Huiras who each drove in two runs and had two hits. Hopkins hitters had great at bats against Edina’s pitcher and put pressure on the Hornet defense consistently forcing 4 errors. The win moves the top ranked Royals to Friday afternoon’s finals matchup where they will await the survivor of Armstrong, Wayzata, and Edina in the loser bracket play. A win on Friday will send the Royals to their second straight state tournament appearance.
