Game Recap

After clearing 4″ of snow off the Hopkins field, the Royals defeated the Orono Spartans 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Makenzie Merritt held the Spartans to 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 9. Merritt also went 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI. The rest of the Royals attack was sparked by Hannah Kleist and Natalie DenHartog. Kleist had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 stolen bases. DenHartog added the power with a booming home run and a double. The Royals shortstop accounted for 6 runs, scoring 2 and driving in 4.
Evelyn Barczak displayed some great glove work in the 5th catching two Orono balls in the gap to stop an inning. The Royals move to 2-0 on the season and open conference play at Wayzata on Thursday.
